Rod Gregory “The Old Fella” four years ago was forced into retirement due to back injuries, and reluctantly could not stay on his beloved farm and Winery/Vineyard.

Scared stiff of retirement, in May 2010, he enrolled in a ten weeks, comedy course to help him learn to create a caricature, wishing to write amusing short stories of his farming days. On completion of the course his tutor offered him a weekly spot in his Comedy Theatre. From this start he gained enough confidence to have his own show in the 2011 Adelaide Fringe.

You have to believe in fate, as how can one man’s life change from farming to appearing on Ch7  2011 “Australia’s Got Talent”. Rod decided to attend the auditioning for Aust Got Talent hoping for just 2 minutes on National Television, to gain some profile as a comedian, hoping he could attract a larger audience to his comedy shows. Rod had said  “Due to his age 67 years old at the time, he did not have the luxury of time on his side”. Quite to our amazement and pleasure, he achieved 4th placing in the Grand Final.

You can’t believe what change the television profile has made to Rod’s career. Since the final in July 2011, Rod has performed consistently through out Australia, averaging between 3 to 4 gigs per week, to 90% full houses. The eastern coast of Australia has just found “The Old Fella” and the larger RSL Clubs, seating 300 to 500 patrons, are now running a One Man Comedy Show, featuring “The Old Fella”

For an old farmer approaching aged 70 in April, his audiences, predominantly aged between 40 to 85 years, just seem to appreciate his good old fashion county humor. He walks on to stage wearing a battered old akubra hat, and starts each of his gigs with his signature word “Viagra”, to a rousing applause.

Rod was asked to entertain, flood and fire victims of the devastated areas of Victoria. This tour was designed to bring a little entertainment and laughter to these poor people who had been though devastation. Calavil and Natimuk, flood appeal, and Whittlesea to Bendigo areas for fire devastated areas. Apparently mental health and suicides in the regions was of great concern. The Calavil evening won a Victorian award for, “The most rewarding event to a region in 2011”. It was an honor to be a part of the healing recovery.

Rod has just been asked to be an Ambassador in SA for “Autism SA” which he has gladly accepted. He has a passion for the cause, as he has two Autistic Grandchildren and understands their constant battle with daily life.

Rod 69, and his wife Toni have been married for 48 years; they have two daughters, Letitia and Ketrice, four grandchildren whom they cherish. They have lived in Maitland on Yorke Peninsula their entire lives. Rod intends to continue on with his comedy career, until his health calls a stop to all the travel, or he can’t remember his routine! Which ever comes first? He has loved every moment of his new career, and has stated, “He never has felt more alive than when on stage.”

He has a draw full of letters of appreciation from people who have enjoyed a evening being entertained by “The Old Fella” many have said similar things, such as “I have not laughed so much since my beloved passed away”, or “since I was diagnosed with cancer”.
