POOL CLOSURE

The pools are now 35 years old and a number of key pieces of equipment have failed. We met last week with the operators and key user groups and outlined the problems and advised that the pool will close on 30 April for winter while we assess the facility and look at a plan for the future.

The heating has completely failed rendering the club with no way to heat the pool during winter and this has dictated the timing. The filters are also unserviceable and we hope to be able to limp them through until the end of April as well but we can’t truly assess them or make any decisions on replacement options that might be available while the pool is operating. These two items are critical but certainly not the end of the challenges the aging facility is facing.

We are in discussions with the operators re possible scenarios for next summer and learn to swim but these discussions have only just commenced.

While the locals have become very used to having access to the complex it is extremely rare for pools to not be owned and operated directly by local government who have access to rates revenue to build, maintain, operate and also redevelop facilities of this scale. The Club does not have that benefit and needs to consider the costs in relation to all of our plans and commitments. We will however, engage with all levels of Government on their appetite to financially support the facility going forward given its unique place and history in the Tweed.

The Club shares the disappointment this challenge brings to all our members and the local community but we must face and address the reality of the situation.
