At the Twin Towns AGM in May, the Board’s recommendation to award Life Membership to two outstanding members was unanimously supported.
Joe Russell Coolangatta & Tweed Heads RSL Sub-Branch President, Joe Russell, was awarded Life Membership for his meritorious and tireless service to the Sub-Branch and veterans’ welfare.
Joe joined the Australian Defence Force in 1970, served in Vietnam as an infantry soldier during 1971-72 and completed a tour of Butterworth in 1974-75. He joined Twin Towns and the RSL Sub-Branch in 1987, the Sub-Branch committee in 2002, was Junior Vice President from 2003-2005 and became President in 2006.
Joe is a qualified Advocate Level III and his work with ex-service personnel, particularly those affected by homelessness and PTSD, is exemplary.
The Board extends their congratulations and thanks to Joe for his ongoing commitment and dedication to the Sub-Branch and ex-service men and women within the local community.
Deserving recipient of Life Membership is Twin Towns Seniors Social Club stalwart, Dorothy Mortimer.
Over the course of the past 30 years, Dorothy has undertaken a daunting workload for the Seniors Social Club in various committee roles.
It all began after moving to Tweed Heads in 1987. Dorothy became a member of Twin Towns and was introduced to the Seniors Social Club by a friend. She had only been a member of the Seniors Social Club for a short time when the position of secretary became vacant. No one really wanted the role so Dorothy stepped in until a permanent replacement could be found.
Many years later in 2002, the Seniors Club’s Tour and Social organiser retired. Dorothy recruited a new Secretary to replace her, took on the new role, then added Publicity Officer to her duties as well. During her years with the Seniors Club, Dorothy has been President, Junior Vice President and has filled in for almost every other vacant position on the Committee.
Twin Towns is proud to have members like Dorothy, and the Board extends their congratulations on her outstanding commitment to her beloved Seniors Social Club.
